Sidelined~

I've got a DOUBLE EAR INFECTION. Seriously! Do I really need a speedbump this early in the game?
I haven't even lost much weight yet and I was just getting into my 30 day shred program:(
But my equilibrium is messed up and my ear/neck is throbbing.... so I'm going to lay low.

grrrrr... I'm destined to NEVER be in a bathing suit this summer! Heck I'd settle for just shorts!

Baby it's cold outside!!!

Ok so I haven't posted in awhile... didn't exercise for awhile either! I went into the first week of December, getting my running lengths longer than my walking. I think I was up to running 6 and walking 3. Pretty good, and with no challenge really.

...Then it got cold. REALLY cold. I thought Virginia was supposed to stay in the low 50s most of the winter, but apparently not this year. We've had a massive cold front bear down on us and it's not friendly for mommy's and babies in strollers.
When it's in the 20s and teens with 20 mph winds and light snow dustings I can't exactly take the baby outside for a run. And my husband's work schedule isn't consistent enough for me to be able to rely on him to be home during daylight hours. (It's dark here by 5pm, remember we are on the farthest end of the time zone).

So, that being said, I'm not totally confident of my ability to run an 8k race in March without being able to train for it appropriately:(

The good news is that while taking three weeks off (gulp) I managed to NOT GAIN A POUND. Even thought I ate everything that was in front of me, I didn't gain any weight of the few pounds that I actually lost in November.

Now that it's January and STILL freezing outside, I've decided to do this new workout DVD inside during Tessa's morning nap. It's called the 30-day Shred. It's with Jillian Michael's, the trainer from The Biggest Loser show. It's 10 days of three different levels, promising up to 20 lb weight loss. Well I'm hoping, realistically, for 10. A nice little winter jump start. Then maybe when it warms up, I can add back in some running!

So for now I'm on day two of the workout DVD and it's going well. Day 1 was a breeze. Day 2 was a little more challenging because I was SORE from Day 1. We'll see how it goes:)

Day Four

Day four, I'm making strides now. This 6/3 pace is easy now. I'm still battling off early chin splints and side of the ankle tendon pain, but I just work through it and it eventually goes away. Jeff came back last night from his two week training trip, so today I get to fly solo on my run. Yippie. I was able to go so much faster without pushing the Bob or towing the Deagan! But I forgot one thing- my ipod. Would've been oh so nice to have it:)

Day Three

Day three, still doing the same pace, walk 6/ run 3. I jumped right into it today. Deagan and I walked Olivia to school like we do everyday and then kept going around the neighborhood to do my program. I felt great, no issues, just getting it done. Deagan on the other hand..... oh man. 35 minutes into it he was just a whiney ball of a hot mess. Stopping every few seconds throwing a screaming fit threatening to ditch his bike (yeah right kid, that's in your top five list of possessions). I just kept on moving. Figuring he's got to know that I mean business, and I'm not stopping. Besides we're too far away from home to stop now anyway. He was bored and decided that it would be fun to stick his right foot into the spokes of his front wheel while riding and see what happens. Well his bike came to a complete stop with his body flying OVER the handle bars. Dammit Deagan. So I stop. I console, I hug and love and do what any mom would do- sit his butt right back on his bike and tell him never to do it again and get his butt moving. :) Hey, I've got no choice. If I stopped every time he did.... I'd never get anywhere!
So we managed to make it the full hour. I ended up owing him a piece of candy and a disney movie;)
_ funny thing happened at the end. My jogging stroller has a long tether like strap that you're supposed to put around your wrist or something so that the baby never accidentally goes flying away from you, should you fall or something. Yeah well, that strap accidentally fell to the ground and I STEPPED ON IT WHILE RUNNING, causing the e-brake of the stroller to snap on and hault it completely. Thus thrusting the stroller handle into my stomach and me half way over it, completely waking up the sleeping baby inside. Yeah, lesson learned, that felt great!

Day Two

Day two wasn't very eventful. I met up with a new friend, Gena, today. I was introduced to her from my friend Angie. They lived by each other in California and we lived by each other in Louisiana, now I live by Gena in Virginia Beach. Aren't military wives great????
Anyway, Gena has just recently become a runner too. In fact she just completed her first 10k. And she's training for the half marathon that is the same weekend as my 8k.
Well this happened to be our first day meeting each other face to face, so we decided to just walk and chat. Now Gena's walk is A LOT faster than my walk. I was struggling to keep up. Warding off chin splints to be exact. Good god I'm out of shape and need to gain lung capacity just to walk this fast and talk with my friend! *sigh*
Anyway, we did about an hour of fast walking. My chart said 45 mins of just walking, so I'm good:)

Day One

So today I jumped right into my walk to run program. It's a nicely printed out calendar of sorts grid that is a 12 week program. It tells me exactly what to do on each day and for how long. I'm excited.
The first day's events: walk 6 minutes, run 2- repeat for an hour. Ok, that's easy.
I get out there and I have Tessa in the jogging stroller, aka "bob" and Deagan riding his bike (this outta be fun).
And so we start, first walking. Everything is well. Then here comes the first running, ok that wasn't bad. I say to myself, I can do this. This isn't bad at all- and it wasn't!
Now, don't get me wrong... running is NOT fun. There is nothing "fun" about it right now. I dream of enjoying it, but right now it's just work and it must be done. I'm running, running away from life with a FAT ASS. Running away from being on the largest size that the "normal" stores in the mall sell. Running, running, running.
So after the first interval, I decided that I can do better than this. 2 minutes isn't even challenging. Now keep in mind I haven't done ANY exercising since before becoming pregnant with Tessa.... so at least 15 months, probably more like 18. Nothing, nada.
I decided to do a walk 6, run 3 instead. And it worked, no problem. Easy.
While moving at this unusually odd thrusting pace, my body decides it would like to show me all of the places that it would like to lose fat. My bubbly butt being the first, and my wavy thighs next. Then there is this unusual sensation on my back, that's right, lower back fat bouncing around. Thank you body, thank you for showing that to me. Yes, I will get rid of it for you:)

And so it begins....

I have decided to start a private blog following my journey from a walker to a runner. I've done this for several reasons:
a) to lose weight. After three kids and a lazy few years, it's time to get back on the band wagon.
b) to ward off diabetes. It's in the family and all over our high-fructose society.
c) to gain strength and stamina
d) to feel better in my clothing and (gasp) a bathing suit. For goodness sake- we live @ the beach now!!!!
e) to set a good example for my children and live a long healthy life for them!

I have set some goals for myself. Not too long term, not too short. I'm not rushing anything.
a) lose 20 lbs
b) do an 8k race in March.

I've been researching this walk to run program online for a bit now after hearing about it on TV. Basically it is a slow "get your feet wet" sort of program that eases you from a couch potato into a runner. It's easy on your body and only takes 45 to an hour a day. Not bad, I can do an hour!

Why running? Well back in 2002 I was in my senior year of college. I had gotten up to about 165, my heaviest weight pre-kids. My roommate at the time starting jogging to lose weight, so I joined her. I ended up losing 20 lbs in just three months. So I figured that works best and I should do it again! Not to mention my husband's amazing transformation. In just one short year he's lost 60+ pounds running- 60! Now that's amazing! The long term health benefits of running just can't be beat!

So here's the meat and potatoes of it all! The truth comes out.... eeek! Ahhh! Grrrrrrrrrr.....
Right now I weigh 176 pounds. Not my highest post-baby weight, but pretty close. Right before I became pregnant with Tess, I was 180 lbs. (I think I just threw up in my mouth a little). To put it in perspective, right before I became pregnant with Olivia I weighed 145. With that being said, my first goal is to be 155. So about 20 lbs. And honestly, I don't even expect to be less than that. That would be a bonus, not a goal. For now I'll start with 20 lbs. Which for me, is totally doable.

So there it is, all laid out. And so it begins.....
